I like the idea. And the pictures are good. I would present them in another way: in pairs of two: inside - outside - outside - inside. Also one or two other pictures that give us more clues about the persons pictured (a shoe, their dog, their bed) might make it more dynamical.
I think it's hard to make a series like this compelling when all the hands are doing the same thing. Maybe give people a prop (like the devil horns from the bar) to hold? Or have them watch sad/scary/funny movies and then take pics of their hands?
